The Manager Mindset Shift
The transition from Individual Contributor (IC) to Manager requires shifting from personal performance to enabling team performance.
Shift 1: Prioritize Team Results
- The Challenge: Moving from taking ownership of the work yourself to distributing it.
- Individual Mindset: "I’ll take the lead because I know I can do it perfectly." (Focus on personal output).
- Manager Mindset: "I will distribute work based on strengths/availability to set the whole team up for success." (Focus on collective output).
- Action: Resist the urge to be the "best" in the room. Prioritize the team's collective results over personal ambition.
Shift 2: Focus on Career Growth
- The Challenge: Assigning work based solely on availability/speed vs. development potential.
- Individual Mindset: Assign tasks to whoever is free to get it done quickly.
- Manager Mindset: Align tasks with team members' skills, interests, and career goals (e.g., giving an AI project to someone interested in leadership/innovation).
- Action: View tasks as development opportunities, not just items on a to-do list.
Shift 3: Impactful Decision Making
- The Challenge: Speed and "saving the day" vs. quality and long-term impact.
- Individual Mindset: Say "yes" immediately to impress clients, even if it risks burnout or quality.
- Manager Mindset: Pause to assess risks. Consult the team on feasibility. Negotiate realistic timelines to ensure high-quality outcomes and protect the team.
- Action: Weigh the broader impact of decisions. It is better to negotiate a realistic timeline than to rush and fail.
💡 Reflection Questions:
- What tasks am I holding onto that could be opportunities for others?
- Whose potential is currently unlocked?
- How can I better weigh the impact on the team in my next decision?
